Blood Work Q&A

What is blood work?

Blood work is a blanket term for several common medical tests that analyze a sample of your blood. Blood contains various substances, including electrolytes, minerals, proteins, and hormones.

If any of these substances fall out of balance, it can affect your quality of life and increase your risk of certain medical conditions.

When is blood work needed?

The Reagan Medical Center team typically includes blood work as part of a routine physical exam. Blood tests provide a quick and convenient way to assess your general health and pinpoint underlying medical concerns.

You might also benefit from blood work if you:

  • Don’t feel well
  • Are receiving treatment for a specific medical condition, like cancer
  • Have a genetic mutation that increases your risk of medical issues
  • Have a family history of kidney, thyroid, or liver disease

The type and frequency of the blood tests you need depends on several factors, including your age, medical history, and symptoms.

Are there different types of blood work?

The Reagan Medical Center team offers various types of blood work. Some of the most common blood tests include:

Complete blood count (CBC)

This test measures your platelets, red blood cells, white blood cells, and hemoglobin levels. It can diagnose various conditions, including anemia, infection, and leukemia.

Basic metabolic panel (BMP)

This test assesses your body’s fluid balance and electrolyte levels. It diagnoses common health conditions such as dehydration, diabetes, and kidney disease.

Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP)

This test measures the levels of 14 substances in your blood, including glucose (sugar), potassium, and calcium.

Like a BMP, this test analyzes fluid balance, electrolyte levels, and metabolism. An abnormal reading (or readings) often indicates an underlying medical condition, like diabetes or liver disease.

Electrolyte panel

This test measures your electrolyte balance. Electrolytes are minerals in the blood responsible for various bodily processes. Below-average readings often point to heart, lung, or kidney issues.

When will I get the results of my blood work?

The time it takes to get the results of your blood work depends on the number and type of tests you underwent. Most labs provide test results within 48-72 hours*, but it could take longer. As soon as Reagan Medical Center receives your results, they call you and explain them.
