Echocardiogram Q&A

What is an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is a noninvasive test that uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to observe your heart in real time. The procedure lets your Reagan Medical Center provider view your heart’s chambers and valves to evaluate the pumping action of your heart muscle.

Who should consider an echocardiogram?

You might benefit from an echocardiogram at Reagan Medical Center if you’re:

  • Preparing to undergo surgery or another complex medical procedure
  • Experiencing symptoms like chest pain, an abnormal heartbeat, or shortness of breath
  • Provider wants to monitor an underlying heart condition like congenital heart disease
  • Provider suspects you have heart disease or another heart-related issue

Echocardiograms are sometimes used to monitor treatment outcomes. For example, your provider might recommend one to assess your recovery after heart surgery.

Are there different types of echocardiograms?

The Reagan Medical Center team offers several types of echocardiograms, including:

Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE)

TTE is the most common type of echocardiogram. During treatment, your provider runs a handheld wand over your chest. The want emits high-frequency sound waves that bounce off your heart muscle and provide real-time images on a screen in the exam room.

Stress echocardiogram

This test evaluates how your heart responds to strenuous activity like exercise. Your provider might order this echocardiogram if they suspect you have coronary artery disease.

How long does an echocardiogram take?

The time an echocardiogram takes depends on several factors, including the symptoms you’re experiencing and the type of echocardiogram your provider orders. Most people complete treatment in 40-60 minutes, but it can take up to 90 minutes or longer.

Because timing varies, the Reagan Medical Center team recommends giving yourself a two-hour window on the day of your procedure.

How do I prepare for an echocardiogram?

Prepare in advance to ensure your echocardiogram goes smoothly.

The Reagan Medical Center team recommends you avoid eating or drinking anything with caffeine before the procedure. Likewise, avoid smoking and using any nicotine products. Caffeine and nicotine can affect how your heart functions, so they could interfere with your results.

Will I get the results of my echocardiogram right away?

The Reagan Medical Center team reviews echocardiograms within 24 hours. After your provider has interpreted your results, they call and explain them over the phone.

You don’t have to do anything else if your results are normal. However, additional testing might be needed if your provider identifies an underlying heart condition.
